What is "domain forwarding" ?
What are "subdomains" ?
Domain Forwarding
Although is a very strange sounding
term, "domain forwarding" is very simple. It is much like "call forwarding"
on a telephone. Lets use the example of Wolfglen Fly Fishing School.
His address is www.helloworld.com/wolfglen. So Jack used our domain registration
service to find an available name. He chose wolfglen.net. After making
this selection we then find the menu option "domain forwarding". We set wolfglen.net
to forward to http://www.helloworld.com/wolfglen. So now he has the shorter
name he desires. People looking for Jack's website can type in wolfglen.net or www.wolfglen.net,
it makes no difference.
In fact, your domain name can be forwarded directly to a particular directory or
function in an existing website. So if you already have a website, lets say
from bellsouth or comcast etc, your website name might be rather cumbersome right
now. E.G. members.bellsouth.net/pwp/r/a/racer148/graphics/ftr/default.html Who can
remember that? So, for example we purchase the name mydomainname.com, we set
it to forward to that big long name and tell everyone our short new name.
Best thing about buying your own domain name is that you can own it forever.
If you move, or change providers, you can move your actual website, but you will
not have to tell anyone. They will keep using yourdomainname.com and they
will never notice the difference.
Subdomains
The last part of a website address is the "top level
domain"; .com, .org, net are examples. The part just
before that is domain name, and before that is the subdomain. For example
let us look at www.google.com. .Com is the "tld", google is the domain name,
and www is the 'subdomain'. It just so happens that www is the most common
subdomain. When you type a domain address into your internet browser and it
begins with "www", your computer knows what kind of computer language and computer
behaviour to expect. Another very common subdomain is "ftp" (file
transfer protocol), though you may never use this.
Examples of our subdomains:
-
faxmail.JTKcommunications.net
-
domains.JTKcommunications.net
-
QSC.JTKcommunications.net
-
whois.JTKcommunications.net
- hosting.JTKcommunications.net
Why subdomains? For larger websites it makes navigation, management, linking,
and advertising much easier. Suppose here on the JTK site you are reading
about domains, domain forwarding, and subdomains and are now interested in learning
more. We could send you to https://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/registrar/search.asp?prog_id=JTKcommunications&ci=1775&isc=code84
, but isn't a lot easier to type domains.JTKcommunications.net ? It certainly
is a lot easier to remember!
Another neat application of subdomains is that you may already have multiple websites
and web applications. You can use one domain name for all of them; just assign
and forward a unique subdomain for each website.
For every domain name you purchase from JTK Communications, you may add as many
as 90 subdomains. There is never a charge for adding a subdomain. !
What about my own
custom email address ?
A great feature about
buying your domain name from us is that you also get a free email account and free
email forwarding. What this means is that you can set up email to be yourname@mydomainname.com.
You can have all email sent to this address automatically forwarded to whatever
mail service you are using now, if you like. Or, you can set up your email
program (for example MS Outlook) to use yourname@mydomainname.com. We will
help you do this. It is quite simple and will only take a few minutes.
So what are you waiting for ?
Choose your name
and get started today for as little as $11 per year.
